According to our recent study, Automotive companies have begun understanding and embracing the FOSS paradigm of collaboration and reuse. Joint efforts like GENIVI®, a non-profit industry alliance, driving the broad adoption of a Linux based In-Vehicle Infotainment open-source development platform, help evolve standards, allow easier differentiation, and make more efficient the process of integrating applications. But the in-vehicle FOSS adoption rate could be much faster. Outside of a limited number of systems, most of them Linux based, the industry still “blacklists” FOSS. And GPLv3 in particular presents a stumbling block that has slowed, and could ultimately stop, the use of FOSS in automobiles. This talk will address where the industry is today, and where are the challenges and opportunities moving forward. It is targeted at business/legal professionals as well as system architects.
